Changing the Belt on a Sander

Hi, my name is Kevin, and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you how to change a belt on a belt sander. We've got two types of belt sanders here that we're going to change the belt on, but essentially they're changed in the same way, but I'll show you both of them just so you can be sure that we covered all the basis here. First things first, you want to make sure the machine is not plugged in. When you're working with the mechanical moving parts of this, other than sanding, you definitely want to have this thing unplugged so that in case something happened it were to kick on that you don't get hurt. So, what you want to do is you want to turn this on its side, on this big belt sander there's a little lever right here that you can see, and all you're going to do is just pull that out and just disengage that lever, which is going to pull this wheel back. It takes the tension off the belt, and you just take the belt off. Same thing essentially here. There's a little knob right here that's going to take the tension off this front wheel, and it just allows the belt to slide right off. So now that you've got that, when you have your replacement belt, what you want to look for is to see, some belts have arrows that are directional which this belt does. So you want to make sure that you orient the arrows, going in the way that the belt sander spins. So, you line it up, we got our arrows pointed the right way, you slide it on the wheels, get it lined up as straight as we can, and then push the switch which engages that front wheel and keeps the belt in tension. Same thing here, look, some belts don't have arrows, which means that they are bi-directional, which this one appears to be, so if there's no arrows, then either way will work. So you just slide the belt on, keep it as centered as possible, and then put the tension back on with this switch right here.
