Joanna Joseph for Expert Village. Calligraphy can be applied in a commercial application as well. I've done a lot of logos where they wanted hand lettering and design involved. This was a column, a newspaper column, so Master Jack appeared every week. This was a woodworker and his handcraft, he appreciated having handcrafted, and he was a German, of German descent, so we chose a German alphabet. And my hand letting went well with his handcrafted woodwork. When you're working commercially, the logo, when you're doing logo design it's often going to be printed in black and white as well as color so you need to make sure it looks good, and it's as simple as possible, so that it reads well, even small and black and white. I live near Lake Powell so a lot of people ask me to hand letter their boats, the name on their boats. I think "Sea Rose" was a boat name. So I, as an artist, I've never been able to choose between words and pictures, I love them both. So calligraphy has been a really nice way to utilize them both.
