STEVE ANTHONY: On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Steve Anthony. I'm here in New York City. Today, I'm going to talk a little bit about some beginning guitar picking techniques. Let's talk a little bit about folk style. It's very "folky". That's why a lot of people do it and that's why we call it folk, I guess. You've heard this style of picking in a lot of songs. It's easiest to do with a finger picking style but if you want to reach for the flat pick, you could probably do it. I think you can hear that it sounds much more natural when you discard the pick, you use your fingers. In this technique, you're simply alternating the bass as you're picking the higher strings with your other fingers. It takes some getting used to--some practice. It's sort of like playing piano with two hands at the same time a little bit. But you'll find it'd be a very versatile style of picking.
