STEVE ANTHONY: On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Steve Anthony. I'm here in New York City. Today, I'm going to talk a little bit about some beginning guitar picking techniques. As you become a more accomplished player, as you get the basics down and maybe you start picking with your friends, you might think, "Oh, I'd like lay down a hot lick somewhere in a song but I don't know where to start." A good place to start with a solo is just playing the notes of the chord in a certain pattern to your own liking. For example, here's an E chord. Well, you can pick out those notes in the E chord and you can find ways to put 'em together. It's a good place to start. You don't have to be Jimi Hendrix right away. But to see--as long as you understand that the solo comes out of the chord notes, it'll start to make sense to you as you put it together. I'm no Jimi Hendrix either.
