Maintain Good Stage Presence When You're Directing Yourself

ALEX BOYE: Everyone, my name is Alex Boye. I hope you're doing good. I hope you're having a smashing day or evening or night or whenever it is you're watching this. We're here on behalf of Expert Village, and we're talking about how to perform effectively on stage. Have you noticed that actors in music--I mean, in films--actors in film and in theater, they all have directors. What do musicians have? Nobody! Nobody. One thing that makes a theater successful is 'cause you have a director that says, "Stand here, stand here. Well, let me give you another emotion, where you're coming from when you're thinking about that? Okay, you're about to run away or you're about to be killed by your best friend, how's that going to make you feel?" It's kinda obvious but he's trying to get an emotion out of you. Musicians, you don't have that so you have to be your own director. Take your song, the next song you're going to sing, all right? When you finish watching this section, the next song you're going to sing, don't sing it. Look at the words, read the words. What does it mean? Is it a happy song? Is it a sad song? Is it a song that is about fear of something? Is it a song that you're longing for something? Okay, think about it. Think about how you would be if you were having that experience and put that in your show. If you are mad, if you are angry, then you act like you're mad and you're angry. You can smile after and say thank you very much. One thing I love about Michael Jackson, okay, love him or hate him, when he's on stage, he owns the stage; he's an animal. But then after, he's just like--when the song's--he says, "Thank you very much. Thank you, I love you. 'Cause I'm bad!" When the song stops, he's someone else. He is acting. You see, we need to do that more as singers. We need to act, we need to be drama queens on stage. I'm not talking about being difficult and being stupid and being like, "Where's my money?" I'm talking about when you're performing on stage, be a drama queen. Everything needs to be big just like theater, everything is big. See you on the other side. Thanks, bye.
