Marking the Center Pole for a Spiral Staircase
Hi! This is Weldon Moon on behalf of Expertvillage.com I am showing you how to build a spiral staircases is another steps. We have determined the height that we need to build the spiral staircase, on this one we are going to go 112 inches. I have used a computer program that I developed to help give me my measurements. I can put the height of the spiral and then I can tell how many steps I need to have. One of the things I have found is, probably one of the most important steps to build the spiral staircase is that the maximum, that you can go in between is 9½ inches. I try to stay as close as that as I can. For one reason, as they come around the spiral staircase, come around, you have a problem with head room. If you do not drop quick enough your head will hit, as you come around and you will not have the 78inches that you need for your clearance as you come around. So staying as close to 9½ inches I possibly can and not going over that way I can make that work and it will always work. So what I do is take these steps. Take these measurements and mark them on the pole. Put a mark on here and go up through and go ahead and mark the whole pole up to the height that I need. Then I will come back and take what they call a wraparound and draw a line around the pole in order to make it possible to see it at any angle as I go up the stairs, I do not have to be hanging for one particular spot. I can look anywhere around the pole and know exactly where I need to put the next step. So that is the process and I will go up through and do that all the way up and that way it will give us the desired locations of our steps.
