MICHAEL PLUNKETT: Hello. This is Michael Plunkett on behalf of Expert Village. We're now going to look at another term that we often find used in tab and among guitarists, it's called pulling. You'll see here pull. It's basically the opposite of a hammer. Whereas, a hammer where we're using our left hand to accentuate a note or to play in your note without actually plucking with our right hand. A pull is basically the same thing except that instead of ascending or descending. So, here, you see me I am here on the 7th fret and I'm pulling down to the 5th. And I literally, we use the term pull. We literally want to pull down on the string. We're almost re-plucking the string with the higher of the two fingers to re-pluck it so we get a nice loud volume. A common mistake that guitarist will make is they'll pluck and they'll lift their finger hoping that you could hear the other one but as you can hear, it doesn't make very much noise at all. So, you really want to be able to dig down into the string. You're actually pushing into the string, and that will allow us to get a nice loud sound. Again, we want--ideally, we want equal volume from the original pluck to the new pluck, and you can see that written here. That was my 7 pulling to the 5th fret and, again, just like with our hammers, we can do this in a consecutive order. We can do many at once starting eight and pulling down; this requires all four of our fingers to get pulling. It's a little bit tricky and it takes some work but being able to this fluidly will help you in many difficult passages in any style of playing guitar. Here, I'm up the 8th with my pinky pulling down to 7, down to 6, down to 5. And I could do the one where I lift it but it didn't really make a sound if you like, and then the consecutive. I'll do that again. That's the pull for the guitar.
