Using Flossing Aids With Handles for Oral Hygiene

Hi I’m Dr. Scott Chandler with Silver Creek Dental on behalf of Expert Village.com. This clip is about flossing your teeth using some of the fancy space age flossing technologies that we have now. I’m going to use this little tooth model here for an example to help us visualize this. One of my favorite flossers is a little one called Reach. The Reach floss you are all familiar with. The Reach toothbrushes; they were some of the first ones that had fancy stuff. Well this Reach flosser has handles to hold onto but it’s got a little piece of floss here on a little horseshoe shape and for those of us who can’t get our fat fingers way back in our mouth to floss those back teeth, this thing is just a life saver. What you do is just reach in there with that floss and you pop that down in between those teeth. You wrap it around and you floss front, floss back, jump to the next one, floss back, floss front all the way around the mouth. Now being able to hold onto that allows you to do pretty good job. Now these little floss things you can use several times. When they start to shred or fray, they are not doing such a good job and you need to go ahead and throw them away. They are removable. Just pop them off, stick a new one on there and you go to town flossing again. You can buy them at any drug store and they also got some mint flavor in them now which is what I kind of prefer. So that is a way to use the common flossing aid called the Reach flosser to get those hard to reach places and to floss your teeth. So if you’ve got a spot that is really hard to get, one other secret here is that we will put the flosser back on, is to go ahead and put that in that place and if you are having a hard time getting it down through, go ahead and give it a little bite. Just gently bite on that and that will help pop that floss down through. It’s a little secret I use in my own mouth.
