Teaching Kids to Count Household Objects

Once your child has mastered being able to identify the numbers 1 through 10, make another chart with the numbers 1 through 20. Once they can count 1 through 20 and they can also identify 18 without counting up, then they can start counting things around the house. Make counting a lot of fun, take out some beans out of a jar, have them count the beans. Take a loaf of bread and let's count how many slices are in there. Take the eggs out, have them count the eggs. Have them count how many shirts they own. How many socks, they own. How many people are in their family. How many people are in their play group. They'll be running around the house, they'll probably take over before you need to give them much encouragement and they'll be telling everybody, daddy guess what? I have 3 or this and I have 20 of that and they'll go up to total strangers and say hey, Mr. how many of this do you have? But the important thing is to just make it a lot of fun and to say that's great, you counted that correctly and just take it from there.
