Hi my name is Jill, dental hygienist from Silver Creek Dental on behalf of Expert Village.com. Flossing is a really important factor in oral hygiene. It is probably one of the most important factors where a lot of people don’t do it. There are different types of floss out there and there is wax floss, unwaxed floss, Teflon coated floss and it is just whatever works best for the patient. There is also spongy floss which is a thicker floss that you can stretch and use for patients like that a little bit better than just a thin floss. Flossing helps between your teeth where the bristles of your toothbrush can’t reach. So you have plaque or bacteria trapped between your teeth where the bristles of your brush can’t remove so you want to make sure you are getting in there with a dental floss; once a day is recommended. Whenever you do that, morning or night is fine. A lot of people prefer to do it before they brush and then they brush after they floss. It doesn’t matter when you do it. It doesn’t matter when you floss like before or after. Most people prefer to do it before but it doesn’t matter. If you notice bleeding when you do floss, you just make sure that you are not snapping the floss down into the gum line really hard. Another factor of bleeding is probably slight gingivitis or gingivitis which is inflammation of your gum tissue. The reason you probably have that is probably you are not in the habit of using floss daily. It could be due from medications that you are taking or pregnancy. There are different things and hormones and stuff that also cause bleeding. Most people choose wax floss. It’s a little smoother. It gets in between the teeth a little easier if you have tight contact areas where the teeth are hitting tightly against each other. Unwax; there is no wax. It is just a string and there are not very many people that use that because it frays or breaks quite easily. It is very important flossing and saving your teeth. They say you floss the teeth you want to save.
