About NHRA Racing Sponsors

TINA STULL: Hi, I'm Tina Stull and I drive the Top Dragster for Interstate Batteries. On behalf of Expert Village, today, we're going to talk about the basics of racing. Things to consider, everybody. I get a lot of questions about how do you get sponsorship and they--I have a full-time sponsor. I do this full time. This is my job. And it sounds like, "God, that's great. Someone gives you money, you get to go racing." There are a lot of things to consider with that. I was looking at my schedule and in January, the start of the year, I haven't really booked everything but just off of what I've done so far, we're looking at 72 days of racing and 48 days of either doing appearances or work for the sponsors. So really, it begins to take a big chunk out of your life and that's not even considering days that would normally be counted travelling to and from. So there's a huge commitment on that. Fortunately for me, I get to take my daughter along with me, but if I have to take all those days and be away from home, we're easily looking at 125 days just right there that I would be away from home. So there's a point where when you switch over from doing it as a hobby and for fun to trying to do it professionally, there is a real shift in how that you look at the sport. And so sometimes my advice is that sponsorship isn't for everybody because a lot of the--almost the third of the time that I'm spending in the sport is actually spending outside of the sport. So when you look at the benefits of getting backing from companies, you also need to look at the responsibilities that go along with that.
