MICHAEL PLUNKETT: Hi. This is Michael Plunkett on behalf of Expert Village. Now, we're going to take a look at the last and final shape of the CAGED series. This is the D shape. We're going to be looking at it in the open position. Again, that's as low as we possibly can play this chord on our guitar neck or as far down as we can play towards the nut. First notice that the two lower, the two bass strings, the 6th and 5th are both X'd off. We're not going to be playing those strings for this chord. The next one, the 4th, we are going to play; that's actually our bass note for this string and then from there, we've got three more notes. We've got on the 3rd string. We've got our index finger, our first finger, and that's going to be on the 2nd fret. Then the next one, on the 2nd string, we take our third finger and that's on the 3rd fret, convenient. And on the very high, the high E or the 1st string, we're going to use our second finger, and that's also going to be on our 2nd fret just like our first finger was. So when we put our fingers on there, lying down like this, again, playing on our fingertips so we can really make sure that we're not covering any of the other strings, we only really want to be touching just the string that each one of these is marked to play. And it will sound like this. And that's our D open shape.
