E Movable Guitar Chords & Shapes

MICHAEL PLUNKETT: Hi. This is Michael Plunkett on behalf of Expert Village. We're going to go ahead and take a look at our E shape in our moveable position. Again, that's any position that's not as low as we can on the neck. You can actually see how when play it here low in the neck, and I move it, I keep the same shape of my fingers. So this is going to show us how to look it at that way of playing it. We're going to start here and you'll notice, again, like we did this in a few other chords, we have our index finger here on the farthest fret back, whatever that is, and that could be any fret really that we start on. I have it on the 6th string. And you also see that same finger again, our first finger down on the 1st and 2nd strings. And that's again where we're using our barre shape, where we're laying one finger down across multiple strings. Again, the thing to remember while doing this is we don't have to press down firmly in all six strings. You do really make all of them sound. It's a lot more pressure from our hands. It's not easy to keep that up. So what we can do is, again, curve our fingers slightly, get the tip of this one and kind of just arc over those or we can just lay down on them a little bit. And then try to bring the back of our finger and lay it down on these. Everybody's hand is a different size and shape, so you're going to have to kind of find your own way of doing this to make it work. But it's going to end up looking something like that in the end where you've got this kind of arc in your hand. It saves us a lot of energy from pressing down on all the strings. Now, the rest of it we see our third and our fourth fingers here on the 5th and 4th strings, respectively, which would be two frets up. And then our second finger, which is just one fret up from where our bar's going to on the 3rd string. So when that all comes together, I've got my bar here, and I take these, my fingers, and I lay them down. And then this one, we are playing all six strings on the guitar for this chord. And that's our E moveable shape.
