How to Remove a Caliper Bridge on Trucks

Hi my name is Nate McCullough on behalf of Expert Village. In the following clips we're going to talk about the correct procedure for replacing your upper and lower ball joints on a two wheel drive full size vehicle. In this clip we're going to talk about removal of our caliper bridge which is this large metal component here and hanging of our brake caliper. We're going to use a piece of coat hanger that I have turned into a double sided one way hook. The reason why your going to hang your brake caliper is the only thing that it's connected to the vehicle by now is a hydraulic hose. Which is specifically designed to hold hydraulic pressure form the inside out. It's not designed to hold the static weight of the caliper. This one's made of cast iron and it weighs about fifteen pounds. If you just let it dangle it is possible to deteriorate or damage your hydraulic hose. So what we're going to do is slip it right through one of the bolt holes and hang it up here on the air conditioning line. If we were just doing brake work it's ok to take and hang it anywhere up in this area. Since we are going to be servicing the front end of the vehicle we are going to hang it back here and out of the way. Once you have your caliper hung you can go ahead and remove the caliper upper bridge. It takes a half inch drive ratchet, the bigger the better when it comes to these. Eighteen millimeter sockets specifically on this one it may vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle. The actual socket your going to need to take it out go ahead and slip here in the back. Now I won't kid you guys, these bolts may take a little bit of elbow grease to get off. You slip it on there and give it a good reef, once you have it broke loose it will spin free like any other bolt. Go ahead and continue ratcheting until the bolt feels like it's free spinning, at that point you should be able to take it out with your fingers. Alright that is a caliper mounting bolt there and your going to go ahead and repeat the same procedure for the bottom one. Once you have the bottom bolt out, right there, you can remove your caliper bridge and set it aside for later re-installation. And that is the proper method to hang your brake caliper and remove your caliper upper bridge.
