How to Test Your Wood Stain
Now let's say that you have chosen your color but you are not absolutely sure that it is the color that you want to use on the wood. What you want to do is you want to take just a little bit of it and test in a little inconspicuous area and as you can see, I've turned the bench upside down here so that I can just test a little bit of the area here. You always want to make sure that when you are putting the stain on that you are going with the grain of the wood and don't overload it. You can just test a small area. I'm testing a little bit of a larger area here but it is just to give you an idea of what the stain looks like. You can always have a cloth on hand if you think that this is too much stain and you want to rub it off. You can pull it off at any time. You can see the difference here between the light and the dark. This is going to produce a beautiful stain and like I said you want to make sure you go with the grain of the wood to put it on there. Let's say that there isn't enough or I think there is too much. You can see how I am rubbing it off there. You really don't want to overload when you are putting it on. You can see how I kind of coated it rather thickly at the beginning but it is always fine to rub it off and you can see now some of the grain. You notice more finely the texture of the wood now. You can see how the wood stain actually brings out some of the darker and deeper areas and that is what I am looking for so I think I have chosen the correct stain for this one.
