Alignment Tools for Reel-to-Reel Recorder

For Expert Village I'm Kurt. Chief engineer at KGB Studios. We're continuing our series on how to restore a 4 track reel to reel tape machine. Okay this is a piece of gear that you need. It's called a Sig-gen or a signal function generator. What you have is this major dial here that dials in the frequency. You have the volume control there. The types of waves are here in the function as saw tooth sign or square wave. Then you have frequencies. We're up to one gigahertz. And that's what the functionality of this signal generator is. Now your plugging in the output to an RCA connection. What we do is I use basically my OHM meter. A testing device that has a frequency counter, to actually dial in and calibrate the frequency properly. And as you can see I have a special kind of impromptu do it yourself cabling method to connect. We definitely want some sort of reference tape for making sure the tones are accurate and calibrated properly for doing this. This company is probably no longer in existence. It's called the Magnetic Reference Library. And this is how you have the reel. It's actually a one off master tape for this. And of course when you do replacing of heads or any calibration you don't want screwdrivers or tools that are magnetized. So I use a plastic set of tools here that Pioneer made a long time ago. Those are the things from equipment that you'll need for doing alignment and we'll start that process in the next session as we continue with how to restore a reel to reel tape deck.
