There's no method, and no calculation for determining where exactly your fingers go on the violin. You're trying to make a specific sound, but depending on the width and point at the tip of your fingers; you'll find that the sound can be just a little bit different by moving around. When you're playing the violin, the first note on the D string is obviously going to be E; the next note in the scale. You want to try to make that sound no matter what you have to do; moving around to make it happen. Always use the tip of your finger. Never use your finger flat on the string. That will make the note go flat, and it will make it harder to play. Always keep your nails trimmed, or you'll have an even harder time playing at the tip of your fingers, and you may even have an accident, and cut one of your strings; flipping it in your face. What you probably want to do as a beginning violinist is buy what is called fingering tape, and someone; a violin teacher or possibly someone at the music store; can place it for you where the notes are on your particular violin. You'll see that as an advanced violinist; just for practice purposes; I still have fingering tape where the advanced positions in third and fifth play the notes.
