How to Use a Violin Bow

This is what a bow looks like for a violin. Bows for violins come in all different types. Some of them are actually metal. Most of the nicer ones that advanced students will have are made of wood. This particular one is made of mahogany. The parts of a bow are always the same; no matter what it's made out of. You have the tip, which helps create direction, and helps to steady the bow. You have the stick itself, which goes along the entire length of the bow, and is the part that helps to create tension with the horse hair. You have the horse hair here, which is the part that plays the violin. It will be the part that pushes against the strings. When you come down closer to the bottom here, you have the tension screw, which is what forces the bow to stay with a nice curve. IF you over tighten your bow, you'll find that all of a sudden; the stick itself becomes straight, and you won't get as nice of a sound out of your violin. At the bottom you have the frog. This is where the horse hair comes into contact with the tension screw, and with the bow itself.
