Drum Beat Variation Tips

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So just briefly, I want to talk about something. You may have noticed as we went through beats one, two, three, and four with the kick drum moving that around, you may have noticed that, as far as things lining up, beats one and three and beats two and four ended up being the same as each other. So one was the same as three, two was the same as four. That's true. On beats two and four, you had all three lining up, and on beats one and three you only had the bass drum and the high hat. It may seem like it's repetitive or like it's hard to figure out the importance of kinda working through that, but I just want to take a second to just kinda emphasize that mechanically it is the same, but conceptually and within the context of any music, it's going to sound very different. So I want you to think about--I want to play you something real quick. And I want you to think about where the beats are falling and just kinda hear how it sounds musically, all right? That was on beat four. I was hitting the kick drum, I also had the one in there, but you can hear how that four just totally defines the sound of that beat, all right? I'm not going to play beat two for you, but you can imagine that it's not the same sound at all. That four, gives it that drop at the end of the bar and it's totally characteristic of that sound. So, as we're working through these things, even though mechanically they end up being the same, it's important to practice these within the context of the beats that they belong because musically, this is going to show up and you don't want to have any surprises in that regard.
