The next basic Brazilian jujitsu position that you are going to be learning is the close guard. The close guard is one of the safest positions that you can put yourself in to protect yourself against another opponent who is trying to mount you or take attacks, punches or kicks or strikes of any kind, jolts, if you are on the bottom. There are many positions of the guard that you can use. The closed guard is the easiest to learn and one of the most effective, what you are going to do is control your opponent’s either sleeves or collar, elbow, collar sleeves, cross collar, numerous ways to control your opponent. We will start with just controlling the sleeves, you know bring your legs up, the hips of your opponent and cross your feet. By crossing your feet, if your opponent tries to choke you, just do regular handshake. She has come up to try to choke, she has no leverage if I drive my hips away. She loses all of her force. By the same token and if she reaches up because she wants to punch with this hand, reach up the punch. As she comes down, I can pull her to me and hold her tight. This is the great control position. I can also reverse from here.
