How to Get Thoughts Together in an Impromptu Speech

When you are called on to make an impromptu speech, there are a couple of things that help you right away to make sure you are on the right path. First of all you want to know how long do I have to speak? Always ask that question. How long did you have in mind? They have 3 minutes, 8 minutes, 15 minutes, you need to know and of course anybody that is calling on you at the last minute to talk for 15 or 30 minutes, well that is tough. Most of the time it is 2, 3 or 5 minutes. The shorter the period of time the more fore thought you need to put into it so you use your words well. So what you want to do is come up with a theme. All great speeches primarily have one basic theme or big idea. So it might be I want to encourage them. I want to give them hope. Maybe they are discouraged and I want to build them up. Or I want to thank them. This is a gratitude speech. Or maybe it is something about the future and I want to give them a great view of tomorrow. You have that theme in mind and once you have that theme in mind, that big idea you want to portray, then it is easier to put together a few great thoughts on it. We'll talk about that next.
