Alternate Picking for Beginning Guitar

BRYAN BILLHIMER: Hi. I'm Bryan Billhimer and on behalf of Expert Village, welcome to Guitar Playing 101, The Basics. Another thing too about this exercise, we can practice on our picking here too. Instead of hitting each note just once, we're going to hit each note four times. I'm going to show you a different type of picking pattern. Instead of just doing all downstrokes with our pick hand, we're going to do what's called alternating picking where we're going to get a down and up and that's what allow you to play faster. So, back to our exercise 1, we're going to start the first fret on the low E string with our index finger. We're going to hit that four times alternating our picking. Now to the second fret. Now down to the second string and take note of my pick hand and the alternating picking of downstrokes and upstrokes, remembering to keep your palm on the bridge. I think you get the idea. So, you want to practice that as much as you can. It's just a technique to get used to fretting the strings and picking the strings. So, now I'm going to talk to you about reading guitar tablature.
