Fretting the Strings for Beginning Guitar

BRYAN BILLHIMER: Hi. I'm Bryan Billhimer and on behalf of Expert Village, welcome to Guitar Playing 101, The Basics. Okay. So now that you know how to hold the guitar and you know your right-hand and left-hand technique, now we're going to talk about fretting a string. So you have our left-hand position, thumb on the back of the neck, fingers arched on the string. You always want to fret the string, meaning push down on the string with the tips of your fingers, right here. You never want to push down with the pad of your finger, always the tip. So we're going to curl our fingers around and we're going to place the tip of our finger on any string right now and push down firmly. And it also matters where on the fret you push your finger down. You don't want to be back here 'cause the note's going to be a little flat. You want to place your finger just behind the fret, so if we're trying to fret the second fret, we want to be just behind the second fret. On the tips of our fingers behind the second fret, fingers arched, gap between the bottom of the neck and your palm, and thumb on the back of the neck. So now that we know how to fret a string, I'm going to talk about right-hand picking technique.
