Left Handed Technique for Beginning Guitar

BRYAN BILLHIMER: Hi. I'm Bryan Billhimer and on behalf of Expert Village, welcome to Guitar Playing 101, The Basics. Okay. So now that we have our right-hand technique down, I'm going to show you what to do with your left hand. So you want to start by placing the pad of your thumb on the back of the neck just about like that, if you can see that. Okay? That's where your thumb will pretty much stay, and it'll slide up and down the neck as you move your hand up and down the neck. Put the thumb on the back of the neck and then you want to wrap your hand around and curl your fingers like so almost like if you had nothing in between your fingers, it would look like that. It would look like you're pressing your fingers against your thumb like this. So that is your left-hand technique. Again, you want to make sure you're curling, arching your fingers. I should be able to stick my finger or a pencil in between the bottom of the neck and my palm. You don't want to be resting your neck or your hand up against the neck like this. Thumb on the back of the neck, curl and arch your fingers; that's your left-hand technique. So next, we're going to talk about tuning the guitar.
