How to Remove a CV Nut on a Car

Hi, my name is Nat McCullough on behalf of Expert Village. In these clips, we're going to talk about the proper way to remove and replace a front wheel drive vehicles ball joint. In this clip, I'm going to talk about removal of the constant velocity shaft containing nut. It's this great big guy here. They're normally larger then what comes in your standard socket set. What I suggest to do, it's not really necessary to go out an purchase one, most of your local tool suppliers will have a loaner tool program. You pretty much pay for the cost of the socket. This one here is a 32mm and when you're done using it, you can take it back and they'll give you your money back. These can be fairly pricey to buy. I have a set of them in my tool box at work. I paid a hundred bucks for them. Again, they are generally bigger then what you would normally have. To take this nut off, I will use my socket wrench. You may want to use a cheater pipe. Something like this so you can maximize the amount of force you'll put to it. The cheater pipe will slide on the handle of you ratchet and just go ahead and give it a turn. Just like that. Once you have it broken free, just take it and hand ratchet it out. And there's your nut for you.
