How to Remove a Caliper

Hi, my name is Nat McCullough on behalf of Expert Village. In these clips, we're going to talk about the proper way to remove and replace a front wheel drives vehicles ball joint. In this clip, we're going to talk about the proper way to remove your vehicles brake caliper. On this particular vehicle, there's only one bolt we have to remove and it's right down here. It takes a 7mm align wrench. It's going to vary widely from specific make and model. This is just for general information purposes. I'm going to seat my align wrench in here and break it loose. Once you have it loose, you can normally unscrew these. If you flip your align wrench over and just twist it right off. You can see it comes out pretty easily. There's our caliper mounting bolt. I'm going to take it and put it in my trusty magnetic tray. From there, we are going to compress the caliper piston slightly in order to release some of the pressure, so we can slide it off. Flat blade screwdriver is my favorite tool for this job. Flip it inside of the inspection hole and apply outward pressure. You want to make sure to pry on the steel backing of the break pad and not actually one the friction material. Once you have the caliper pressure released. You can roll it out of the way and slip your break caliper off. It's a good idea to take and support these. You don't want to hang it by your break hose. Just go ahead and set it on top of your vehicles suspension.
