I'm Ivan Madar. I'm a professional ski instructor and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. So now you've learned all the basics, let's move on to the next stage. That will be a stage more advanced skiing and perhaps moving up to the category of expert skier. First of all, we have to learn how to take advantage of our new design of the skis. The modern skiing today utilizes what we call a shaped ski. The shape ski (the simple explanation) is the ski is wider at the shovel than it is at the center of the ski or than it is wider at the heel. So, there's already a side cut built into the ski that promotes the turn. So, the purpose is to work the ski to your advantage. That will enhance the turning ability. The larger the side cut, the tighter the turn on a ski. So, these days you have a selection of shaped skis. The lengths are much shorter than they used to be in the past. And you can select from various types of side cuts. So, if you are a racer and you race a slalom ski, the ski will be shorter and there will be a very radical side cut on it that will make the ski turn. More recreational skis are more forgiving and they allow for skidding and a straight run. As well, they support you when you carve the turn and that is the term that we are using now for the next stage of development of the skiing ability (is to learn how to "carve" the turn). Essentially, carving the turn means controlling the turn from beginning to end on the edges of your skis with as little skidding as possible. So, that way you will be able to determine the radius of the turn. You will control the speed rather than just slowing down or accelerating through the turn. You determine which way you want to go. It is an advanced maneuver and you are ready for it now, you just need some drills to develop better edging skills.
