I'm Ivan Madar. I'm a professional ski instructor and I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. We are going to talk about skiing today and how you start skiing, how you progress and how you become a safe and advanced skier. Now, as you can see there is no snow anywhere here (on the ground or above). We are going to start with a dry demonstration of certain basic principles that you apply throughout the skiing progression. Those principles will be useful to you throughout the beginning all the way through advanced skiing. First, let's talk about the basic stance and the basic balance. It's easier to do it without skis and without boots in our athletic gear. Let's just see what happens when we stay with our feet together, hands together, in this position. You have virtually no balance and no stability at all. You can tip over really easily. You don't have any stability this way or this way. So, how do we correct it in skiing. First of all, widen your stance and you start with a much wider base. Secondly, you put your hands to the side to help you balance. Right now, it's much easier to balance yourself right over your boots. Secondly, and looking at it from the side, you are standing right over your feet (not leaning backwards). If I lean backwards, I'll fall back. If I lean forward, obviously I'm going to fall forward. So, ideally, you stand right over your feet.
