How to Tie a Figure 8 Knot

Now this is the classic knot. This is the classic figure of eight knot. This knot is very simple to do, but it?s also very complicated if you miss a step. And I'll show you what I?m talking about if you look down here on my table. You can see I have my line already set up. And what I?m going to is I?m just going to take it and I?m going to pull out a little bit more length here. And I?m just going to wrap it over like this. And then pull it back under to make, you know, just cross it back under to make a loop. You can see its already a figure eight. Now if I take this knot and pull it back here like so, you can see it?s just going to go into an overhand knot. And I've made this mistake many of times, as many people do. And I?m going to show you, I?m going to take it and loop it over and loop it under. What I want it to do, is I want it to come back over this piece here, this upper piece, come back over and through. And as I slide it through, you can see its going to hold this nice eight shape as we pull it through. There you go, this is the classic figure of eight knot, used by sailors, ancient mariners, you name it. Let's do this one more time. Loop it over. Actually, we'll do it like this, we'll loop it under, just to mess with our minds a little bit. And we'll loop it back over. And as you can see, if I loop it over now, it?s just going to go back into a regular overhand knot. So I?m going to loop it under this piece here and pull it to. And there it is. A figure of eight knot.
