Hi! My name is Dr. Sean Flaherty from Summer Chiropractic in Puyallup, Washington. I would like to talk to you today about who is chiropractically cared for. It is really… chiropractic care is for all ages from the infants, newborn to the most elderly. My youngest patient to date is two months old. Why do children need chiropractic care and how safe is it? Well, you have think that the most traumatic experience in a person’s life is being born, you are in a nice and warm place, comfortable, you have food, it is a little dark, and then when you are born, while you come into this big, bright world, these hands are grabbing you, a lot of times in order to get out of the birth canal, you will see doctor will twist the head all the way around in order to get those shoulders to come out of the womb, and it is quite traumatic, I have seen pictures with their heads actually all the way twisted around like a poltergeist, and that can be quite traumatic on a little guy so… and can cause a lot of damage in the neck, so we check the newborn as soon as possible. Now the adjustment is not the same as it would be for an adult for you and me. The adjustments are actually extremely light force. I will take a pinky contact actually and just… with just hardly any pressure at all, I would address that spot on the cervical spine where I will feel the vertebra misplaced and the vertebra just goes right into place. Babies also… they don’t need as much care as an adult. We live our lives and our bodies get set into patterns and it takes time to reeducate the body to hold it in a proper way, well, there is not much muscle memory in a newborn, so they will respond very quickly, one or two adjustments, and then you will not have to see them probably again for quite a while. Also you know ear infections, constipation, a lot of these problems that young children, infants have, can be gone in almost one or two adjustments. I can go through with you case after case of ear infections that have just disappeared as opposed to having antibiotics or something like that.
