Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series we have been talking about square foot gardening and the reasons why it is so successful. Square foot gardening is just gardening using raised beds with compost. And because everything is contained within your little box and you've got great compost, there's really no need for any chemicals, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, insecticides; pretty much anything chemical does not belong in your garden. Because everything is contained in a four foot by four foot square, you usually don't have any problems with insects, any problems with fertilizing or any problems with your plants at all. And generally, fertilizer doesn't address the problem; if your plant is not doing well, it's generally because it's too much sun, not enough sun, or too much shade, too wet or too dry. Well, with the raised beds, you can control all of that. You can control the water, you can control everything and that is why square foot gardening is so great for the environment and is a great sustainable gardening method. The next segment will talk about why using a little space can provide such results.
