How to Add Compost to Square Foot Gardens

Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series we have learned all about square foot gardening; in this segment we will talk about adding compost to your square foot garden. When you start with your square foot garden, you want your compost to be about six inches tall. Well, if you go back in the fall, once you've started your garden in the spring, you'll notice that it might be down to four inches or so (because what happens is the ground compacts over the season and the plants decompose and they break down). An easy, easy trick is to just take a wheel barrow and fill it up with some compost and add another couple inches to your bed each fall. Just use good earthy compost and a lot of times, what I'll do is just cut the brown greenery off of all my plants, set that on top of the bed and then put an inch or two of compost over that and that way your plants are providing compost for themselves and the next year, they will just be glorious. In the next segment, we will talk about why square foot gardening is really less work.
