How to Pick Square Foot Garden Plants

Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series, we have been talking about square foot gardening; how to make raised gardens that are four by four feet that within that four by four feet you have one foot squares. Within each square you can plant different plants and it works very well with many different types of plants. So, when choosing the plants that you want to place in your square foot garden, there's a lot of factors that you should consider. First of all, you generally want plants that are going to stay on the small side. You don't want a plant that is going to grow larger than one foot by one foot in the first year. Square foot gardening works really well with vegetables and fruits especially because that way in April or May of every year, you can start your seeds in each separate square and let them grow and develop and take care of them all summer. Then they die back in the fall and you cut the leaves and plant out and you can start all over the next year. Personally, I love to plant flowers. So, my square foot garden that I'm planning to build is going to only include South African plants. It will be my South African display garden. That way I can keep every color of crocosmia separated, my different pineapple eucomis lilies separated. I can plant some of my more exotic South African plants like cyrtanthus and bulb vanillas in their own separate squares and that way they don't get mixed up with the others. So, square foot gardening is a perfect plan if you have very exotic plants or plants you really want to keep track of or if you just want to plant your vegetables there and enjoy the harvest in the fall.
