The Acid Test for Pawn Shops
Hi, this is Luis for expertvillage.com and we're going to be talking about pawn shops. Today I'm here at Inland Jewelry and Loan. Basically when a person comes into a pawn shop because they need money, we just need their ID. That's all, they don't have to fill anything out, it's basically done by computer. We work with a company called Data Age and basically what they do is they write our, they write the programs for writing up a loan. Basically we just take your ID, we slide it through here, enter your information in the computer. Once you're logged in we write the loan up and make sure that all the details are on there. But before we do that we test your merchandise. This right here is called an acid kit. What it does is it test to see if your gold is real or not. And it also tells us what karat it is. For example my wedding ring is 14 karat gold and what it does is basically we take this and scratch it a little bit and we drop some acid on there. If it's not real, it turns black and you'll see it right away. If it's real, it stays as you can see it stays and that tells you that it's real. Then we also take another apparatus called the diamond tester and we test the diamonds. Basically what that does is it test for heat. Diamonds are made be tremendous heat and pressure from the earth and they always keep that heat inside of them. And as you can see, I don't know my diamonds are kind of small; see the light go up to diamond on the diamond tester? That's telling me that this is a diamond on this ring.
