The Quarterback’s Role in the Option

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about now is when running the option play, the quarterback is a very, very important position. We're going to talk about some of the things he's going to do. (video demo) The first part that will set up this option, especially when running out of an I formation, is that when he takes the snap he's going to open up to the inside and fake through to the fullback. That will bring the linebackers up and hopefully draw some of the defense to the fullback. Then he's going to start down the line of scrimmage. The next important thing the quarterback has to be watching for is, he's watching for the defensive end, or if you have a defensive back that's coming in on the outside. He's watching this guy's shoulders. If this guy comes to the outside of the quarterback, that means he's keying up and playing the tailback. So, then the quarterback will turn it up the field and try to pick up positive yardage. If the defensive back or the defensive end looks to the outside, that means he's coming toward the quarterback. The quarterback will try to suck him in and he'll throw it to the tailback. So, this guy has a lot of decisions to make on the option. That's why we call it an option play. Remember, your quarterback has to be a good athlete and he has to be able to make good decisions. He also has to have good foot work. All those things will factor into running a good option.
