Questions & AnswersHi! I’m John Antonelli on behalf of Expert Village. This video lesson is going to be on how to the hold the sticks of about our left hand on a marching snare drum. There are two basic ways to hold the stick in our left hand while playing a marching snare drum. One way is a match grip, that’s going to entail checking out video one and using the same exact grip as for our right hand. This video, however is going to talk about traditional grip, which is the one I prefer. The traditional grip starts off by making an L with your hand into your thumb. The stick is going to rest in the junction of that L. The thumb is going to clamp down, not tightly but tightly enough to where it’s not going to fall straight out. This is going to be your back fulcrum. The next step is going to be curling your pinky finger underneath your ring finger and sliding that underneath the stick. Now, the stick is going to rest between the first knuckle and the tip of our left ring finger, like so. The next step is gracefully bending your left middle finger on top of the stick to where it’s not going to necessarily manipulate the stick, however it’s just going to gracefully join the hand together. The next step is finally completing the front fulcrum. It’s going to be gracefully, again, bending the left index finger on top of the stick to where in between knuckle one and the tip of the left index finger is resting on the stick, like so. Then, this is the most important part, connecting the thumb to the very first knuckle on our left hand. This is how we hold the stick in the left hand.
