Using Compost for Flower Beds
Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series, we've learned all about compost. And my goal, with my compost heaps are to turn them into flower beds. So, that's how I'm creating new flower beds. Every fall, as I rake up my new leaves, I throw them in a pile. Every summer, I turn my grass clippings into compost by throwing them on my compost heap and every couple of weeks, I go through my refrigerator and take everything that can be put in my compost pile and I throw it in my compost pile. Eventually, it creates a pile large enough to create a flower bed. It's as easy as that. Usually what I'll do, is once it reaches maybe one or two feet tall, I will add maybe three or four inches of compost that I bought from my garden center that is usually a four way mix (which is sand, grass clippings, leaves and fir - which is pretty much what I've already got in my garden) and I'll just add a little layer on top and then plant right into that. You don't really have to have a large garden to have your own compost. There are lots of ways you can compost in a small garden and have a compost heap. In the next segment we will talk about it.
