Avoiding Manure in Compost
Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series, we've learned all about composting and how to start your own compost heap. And a question I get asked a lot and a question I've asked a lot too is: why do people use manure in their garden? Well, it is great organic material, and it gives plants lots of nutrition. Once it's aged, once it's sat in a pile for a while, there's really not many pathogens in it. That's what they say. But, I still have a policy in my garden; I don't allow any bodily fluids or any part of any carcass in my garden because it's my garden. It's not a cemetery and I really want my plants to grow well. And why would I use anything like that in my garden and risk my children playing in it when I have leaf clippings, I have grass clippings, I have branches I can break down and make my own compost and mulch with. There's a lot of people that still use manure in their garden and it works wonderfully for them. And it would work wonderfully for me too, but I choose to garden totally naturally, not using any bodily substances. So, next we will talk about problems with deer, rodents and mice in your compost heap.
