How to Keep a Tree as a House Plant

Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series we are learning all about house plants, and in this segment, we will talk about using trees as house plants. There are many types of trees that you can use as house plants. Christmas trees don't have to be cut; they can always be placed in a container and you can use them for Christmas. The problem with using fir trees and cold climate trees in the house is that eventually, because of the heat of the house, they seem to die. It's just too hot for them. So, when you use a tree that's a fir tree or a spruce as a house plant or for a Christmas tree, make sure as soon as the decorations are down that you throw it back outside so that it can cool down again. So that's the trick; or you can always choose ficus trees or banana trees or any trees that are tropical because they will thrive in your house because they need the warm climate. They need the warm weather. So, all types of trees make good house plants. There are many other trees that you can use as house plants. Bonsai trees have been used for centuries in Japan. They are just miniature trees that have been grafted to stay very small. But always remember, when using tropical or cold climate trees, it's good to make sure that they dry out in between watering and they never sit in water and that you use good compost with them; never fertilize because you don't want a growth explosion and they get lanky. Fertilizer makes trees lanky. So, trees can be a great basis for your indoor garden. In our next segment, we'll talk about indoor garden design ideas.
