Determine How Much Sunlight Your House Plant Needs

Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series we are learning all about house plants, and in this segment, we will talk about sunlight and how much sunlight your house plant needs. In my house, we have different rooms that have different conditions. In the kitchen, it's really sunny because I have sun coming from the window in the front and the window in the back. So, sunlight is not really an issue and my plants do really well in there; and they have the moisture from the kitchen, which they love as well. So, I have a windowsill where everything does really well. Unfortunately, in my living room, it's very dark. The trees are on both sides that kind of shade it out, so there's not a lot of natural sunlight that comes in through the living room and a few of my house plants have actually died because they hadn't had enough sun. But, I've learned over the years that an easy trick is I have just a lamp that I put in the corner and the lamp is on every evening and during the day sometimes, if it's a cloudy day. Just that extra bit of light has made all the difference and now the house plants that are near the light seem to survive just as well. So, even in a dark location, a lot of times, house plants will do just fine. If they are starting to grow very lanky, it means they are not getting enough light. So, either add some artificial light or put them in a room with a little more light. In the next segment, we'll talk about using lights on your house plants.
