Determine the Best Soil for House Plants

Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. In this series we are learning all about house plants, and in this segment, we are going to talk about the best soil to use with our house plants. Compost is always the best soil to use for your house plants. You can buy it by the bag, or you can take it out of your own compost heap, but either way most house plants need something to hold on to and compost is usually the best choice. So, when I'm planting my containers, usually what I'll do is put gravel on the first level so that the soil won't run out of the holes. Then, put soil all the way up to maybe just a few inches and then put a layer of soil and your house plant in. Then I cover the whole top with either a layer of marbles or rocks. That way, the roots have somewhere to grow. Many plants don't even need soil; they will grow right in water. So, I like to experiment and put my plants in rocks and soil and water and in different parts of my house. That way I can enjoy them. In the next segment we will talk about how much sunlight or light that your plants need.
