Get Your Own Sound Man for a Live Rap Performance

PETTIDEE: What's up? This is Pettidee with Soldier Sound Records on behalf of Expert Village, and today we're going to give you tips on live performance. Next we're going to talk about having your own sound person if possible. I know that I'm trying to explain on all different levels. You have guys that have their DJs, have their own soundman, have their own people come in, even their own equipment. But if you don't have your own equipment, if you're going from a CD or you're going from your iPod or your MP3 player, if all possible, make sure that you can have your own sound person there, if all possible. A lot of times a lot of these sound people they really couldn't care less about your music, you're just another gig for them, and so, they won't know how to do your sound the way you like your sound to be done or the order of your music. If you say, "Hey, I want to do this next song first," that person that you brought with you will know exactly what song you're talking about. If the sound man is not comfortable with them being back there while they're doing sound, at least allow your person to run your CD. That way you have a person back there that knows your signals and can say, "Hey, turn his mic up. Turn his mic down. Turn the house up." That person can also be your eyes and ears and so, if all possible, have your own sound person. If you could run your own--get somebody to run your--again, get somebody to run your MP3 player or your iPod or even your CD player; it'll just help you have a better show. So, if all possible, have your own sound person. If not, get real good friends with the soundman, so...
