Overcoming Fear before a Live Rap Performance

PETTIDEE: What's up? This is Pettidee from Soldier Sound Records with Expert Village, and I'm going to give you tips on performing live. Next we're going to talk about when performing, fear. Don't be afraid of their faces. The most important thing to do, you know, you hear stories about people saying, "Hey, I just stand there and I look at the back wall and that's how I get through it." Well, some people--you can do that starting out, but if you want to be a professional performer, the best thing to do is to let people know through eye contact that, "Hey, I'm giving this my all," but at the same time don't focus so much on eye contact till you lose focus of what you're doing 'cause remember you are the master of ceremony and the purpose for eye contact is to let them feel the lyrics and feel the vocals of what you're talking about. When you give eye contact, most of the time eye contact usually follows a hand gesture. Most of the time eye contact usually follows a smiling face or somebody singing the lyrics, or if they don't know the lyrics, it's a sign of, "Hey, I want to know that I'm giving you a good show." Don't be afraid. Don't fear if you see that person that's just standing there or they're just sitting out because most of the time those people are really, really listening to you intently, and when I've done shows and I've had that guy that just sat down and looked at me, those are the very people that come out and buy CDs and say, "You know, I was--I really feel what you are saying." Because a lot of times those people are really listening to the lyrics and trust me, don't fear the fans and don't fear the audience because if they're not booing, then...
