Rehearsing before a Live Rap Performance

PETTIDEE: What's up? This is Pettidee with Soldier Sound Records on behalf of Expert Village, and today we're going to give you tips on live performance. Next, we're going to talk about rehearsal. It is very important to rehearse. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. The importance of rehearsal is--well, I look at rehearsal just like a football coach would. If you play hard in rehearsal, you won't have a problem starting in the game and you won't have a problem performing well in the game, so you have to rehearse. Rehearsal gives you confidence in your performance. Rehearsal gives you the opportunity to improvise when you're doing your show because you already know your music. And also, when you rehearse, if you decide to use a hype-man or a back-up singer, make sure that they know your music too. I know plenty of artists who have a friend that likes their CD and so, "Hey, why don't you come and back me up?" and it just looks horrible when they get on the stage. Make sure that your back-up singer or your hype-man knows your music. And really, the purpose for a hype-man is to hype the crowd. The hype-man is not supposed to stand up there and watch you while you run around and say, "Yeah! Huh! Huh!" and just run into the music. The hype-man is really like the jester. He's kinda like the guy there while you're rapping, doing your thing, kinda like the rodeo clown almost. And I don't want to call him a clown, but that person that gives you hype, your hype-man. And that's the person that gets the crowd involved, keeps the intensity level up; they know your music, they've rehearsed with you and they're there to make your show better but you have to have to rehearse. You have to rehearse.
