Preparing a CD for a Rap Performance

PETTIDEE: What's up? This is Pettidee with Soldier Sound Records on behalf of Expert Village, and today we're going to give you tips on live performance. Now, we want to talk about performing and having all of your songs and music on one CD. Most of the time--you know, when I first started, I would go do shows and I will see all of these artists, they would give the soundman five or six CDs, "Okay, play track 1 from this CD, play track 3 from this CD, play track 2 from this CD," and then you get about four or five artists that do that, you get a jumbled up mess and then the night of the show, the soundman is doing his best to give you--to play your song and you're standing there going, "Wrong song. Wrong CD." He plays the next track, "Wrong CD." "Okay, it's CD number two," and the whole time everybody is just standing there and looking. From that I learned, what I'm going to do is I'm going to put all of my songs on one CD. So, make sure that you use one CD, preferably in order, so that all the soundman has to do is pop it in and play. Make sure that you use one CD. And, if possible, when you use one CD, do not be cheap. This is your career, this is your livelihood, or it's just for fun, but for whatever it is, it is--you need to be professional. I usually use--when I burn the CDs I use a CD-R music CD--an engineer told me about CD-R music. They play universally through pretty much all the CD players because some CD players were made in different years, so some CD players won't play regular CD-Rs, and don't buy the cheap CD-Rs because you'll get somewhere to perform and you won't have anything to play on because your stuff is on a cheap CD-R and it can't be read. So, make sure that you have one CD. Also, make sure that you have three CDs. What I usually do is I have three CDs: I have my main show disc then I have my rehearsal disc and then I have my backup disc. The reason why I have a show disc, a rehearsal disc, and a backup disc is because my backup disc is--it never gets touched, obviously, because it's--just in case something happens with my show disc, if I give it to the soundman and he's got butterfingers and he drops it and he slides across the floor and it's got scratches all over and I'm not comfortable giving it to him, I will place--give him the rehearsals--the back-up disc. Then I have a show disc, a rehearsal disc that I can play and scratch up and, you know, have the wear and tear on it. So, make sure that you have three CDs; you have a rehearsal disc, you have a show disc and you have a backup disc.
