How to Run a Sweep with a Single Set Backfield

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we're talking about is how to run an effective sweep or pitch play to the outside using your speed as much as you can. Sometimes, we will run our offensive set with a one back set. You can still run the pitch or the sweep with a one back set. Instead of having a fullback to lead block for him on this side, we'll use our tight end to block on the outside. Looking at our formation (video demo), we don't have a tight end set to the left side. That's where we want to run our sweep play. You can take your tight end and have him go in motion to the near side and reset. Once he gets reset we can run the play, the sweep or the option, to the left side. Let's run the sweep play first (video demo). Our quarterback will take it, step open and he's going to run to the running back. He's going to exchange the hand off, he's going to run it to the outside. The tight end has pinned the defensive end to the inside and we're going to take it on up the field. You can also run the pitch out of this same formation. We like to use this if we have a real speedy back in the backfield. We want to get him to the outside and use his speed. The pitch play will look like this (video demo). He's going to give him the pitch, he's going to go up, your tight end will come out here and fix up inside and we'll go up the field and hopefully score the touchdown.
