How to Find the Perfect Peonies
Hi. This is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. Peonies are one of the most beautiful flowers in your yard. They bloom every year, usually April, May, June and they look just like a Rose or a Hibiscus or something really really flashy and gorgeous in your yard. They are native to the mountains of China so they are very hardy. In fact, they need a cold winter to do really well and sometimes when we don't have a cold winter in the northwest, I've noticed we don't get as many blooms as we do when we have the colder winters, so I always plant them a little bit a way from the house, especially when you live in a mild climate area that doesn't get really hard winters, because they really like the cold weather and do really well, the colder it gets. A Peony bulb is really a root, so it's very woody and it has little eyes like a Dahlia does on top, so it's all about the eyes. The roots really don't mean a lot. I've just planted even pieces that just had a few eyes and they've always grown for me. When I plant them, anything that's a root, you just kind of go sideways with the eyes towards the top and on Peonies, they really don't want to be too deep, so when I plant them, I actually only plant them one to two inches below the surface for the eyes. They don't want to be disturbed, so the best thing to do with them is just plant them and just kind of forget them, whether it's in the pot or the ground. Try to put them somewhere where you're going to leave them for many, many years to come. Next, we are going to continue our discussion on the different varieties of Peonies.
