How to Run a Quarterback Sneak

Hi, this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. What we want to talk about right now are the proper mechanics to a quarterback sneak. This can be a very effective play but if done the wrong way you can possibly lose yardage. Most of the time what you want to do, there's two ways that you want to run a quarterback sneak. If you ever look up and notice that there is absolutely nobody in the middle of the field, if they've got a tackle lined up here, and a tackle lined up here, and the middle is wide open, sometimes you can have your quarterback option to go quarterback sneak. And what he'll do is he'll just walk up, he'll hit the center, he'll snap it, and he'll go and he'll pick up a lot of yardage through the middle of the field. The other time we run a quarterback sneak is when we have just a short yardage to go, less than a yard to pick up a first down. The mechanics of the quarterback sneak is, once we go under center and we snap the ball, we want our quarterback to not take three steps back, we don't want him to run to the outside. We simply want our quarterback to take the ball, secure it, not to fumble it, and just go right behind his line as they block we want him to stay right behind those guys. If he doesn't stay with his blockers he's going to be all for himself with a man coming at him and you're not going to pick up the yardage needed for the first down.
