How to Pitch a Football

Hi, this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. Right now we are working with our quarterbacks on how to make the proper hand offs and pitches. Right now we want to talk about the technique of pitching the ball to the runningback. There are a couple of different types of pitches. One is a quick pitch where the quarterback just simply is going to turn, open up and pitch it into the backfield. It's kind of like a hand off. And then there's the pitch where the quarterback is going to turn the opposite direction and we want him to pitch further down the line of scrimmage. The most important parts on the pitch are, obviously, where are the eyes of the quarterback? We cannot have our quarterback throwing a pitch to a receiver or a runningback that's going behind him from this angle and just letting it go or it could be a disaster. What we want is, we always want our quarterback to lock eyes with who he's going to throw it to, then release the ball. The pitch is going to come from underneath, he's going to release it about knee high and try to throw it in the belly of the runningback. We don't want the ball to hit him in the face or be over his head. That is a proper pitch. Now, we're going to show you what it looks like when a bad pitch happens and the ball throws high because this could turn into major problems. Mainly, the other team recovering the ball and running it back for a touchdown. So, if it's not executed properly it could look something like this. And you can see we're going to get a turnover there or if this guy's not looking and he throws it over his head it could be a disaster for your team. The pitch is good, but it has to be executed properly.
