Footwork for Pitching a Football

Hi, this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. What we want to talk about right now is the proper mechanics to the footwork behind making a pitch. It is very important to take the proper steps so that you're not short of your running back. So the first thing we want to do on the pitch is, remember our first step is always a deep step back. So when you take the snap and you're going to pitch the ball, the first step is deep to the back field. As your running back starts to run out, then your second step is going to be short and then you make the pitch. Now you can do it one of two ways. If you take a deep step, you can stutter step here to get a deeper pitch or you can just take one step and pitch, sometimes they're called quick pitches, sometimes its a deeper pitch depending on what kind of play that we've called. And this is the way the footwork looks when we do this at a fast speed. Good. So you see his first step was back, he turned, he got himself open, and then he took a step with the pitch. You don't want to throw the pitch while stepping away. You want to always be going towards the running back.
